There’s a kind of death that happens long before the body breathes its last — a spiritual death brought on by a life lived in ignorance and misdirection. The verse “Bhajyo nahi Bhagwan murakh jivata maryo” strikes at this very core, describing the fool who never turned to God and thus died while still alive. Life, when lived without spiritual awareness or purpose, becomes hollow no matter how busy or full it appears on the surface.
Driven by greed, many chase wealth and pleasure without a second thought for the consequences. The soul grows numb as one commits sin just to feed the body or line their pockets, without any fear of divine judgment. Meanwhile, when others engage in virtuous acts, such people find only scorn and sarcasm to offer, mocking goodness instead of being inspired by it. This reveals a heart closed off to growth and humility.
All the while, suffering and toil go into amassing material treasure — gold, power, possessions. But in the end, none of it goes with us. When death arrives, as symbolized by Yama, it takes away the soul bare and alone. The wealth remains behind, meaningless to the journey beyond.
What’s even more tragic is the misguidance such people choose: wearing the garb of spiritual seekers while following false gurus, and becoming enslaved to gluttony, lust, and ego. Such indulgences bring no liberation. No soul has ever been saved by these distractions — they only sink one deeper into the cycle of suffering.
True transformation only begins with recognizing a true guide — in this case, Sahajanand Swami — and allowing divine knowledge to settle in the heart. Without that recognition and surrender, the inner self remains restless and disconnected. As Devanand Swami reflects, if you haven’t made space for the divine within, then what have you truly accomplished in life?
