The Miracle of Memory and the Depth of Devotion
A Moment That Stunned Everyone
Can you remember the face of someone you met 62 years ago? Most of us can’t even recall what we had for breakfast yesterday. Yet, Mahant Swami Maharaj — the spiritual leader of the BAPS Swaminarayan Sanstha — remembered a devotee he had met in 1960, instantly and by name.
It was 5th January 2023, in Ahmedabad. After his morning puja, Swamishri was meeting devotees one by one, blessing each with his serene smile. A sadhu introduced an elderly man from Mombasa saying, “Swami, this is Ramnikbhai Thakkar, one of the oldest devotees there.”
Without hesitation, Swamiji replied:
“Yes, I saw him in 1960. He was in the parade.”
The room fell silent. Everyone was astonished. Sixty-two years had passed, countless faces had come and gone, yet Swamishri’s heart remembered — not as a feat of the mind, but as an expression of pure love.
The Spiritual Science of Remembering Through Love
Not a Casual Connection
For most of us, memory fades with time and distance. But Mahant Swami Maharaj’s remembrance comes from a space far deeper than the intellect — it arises from the spiritual heart. His connection with devotees is not transactional or fleeting; it is sacred and enduring.
“In Swamishri’s heart, not a single devotee is ever forgotten — because his connection is not casual, but love: deep and personal.”
This is the essence of bhakti (devotion) as taught in the Swaminarayan tradition — a love that does not depend on presence, performance, or proximity. It is love that recognizes the divine in every soul, and therefore never fades.
The Divine Vision of Oneness
When a spiritual master like Mahant Swami Maharaj sees someone, he doesn’t merely see their face. He sees their atma — their eternal self. That recognition transcends the boundaries of time and memory.
Such awareness comes from years of self-discipline, devotion, and surrender to God. It is a living example of seva (service) guided by prem (love).
A Lesson in Valuing Every Soul
The Quiet Ones We Forget
Most of us remember those who help us, support us, or appear frequently in our lives. But what about those who quietly walked with us for a short distance? Those who crossed our paths once and left silently?
Swamishri’s memory reminds us that no one is insignificant in the journey of faith. Every devotee, every seeker, every small act of goodness is cherished in the divine ledger of love.
“Most of us remember the ones who help us or those we meet daily, but forget the quiet faithful ones who cross our paths once in a lifetime.”
His example urges us to look beyond the surface — to see the unseen devotion, to remember the forgotten faces, and to nurture the relationships that time might have let fade.
Making Everyone Part of the Story
Swamishri teaches us that spiritual greatness is not found in building empires or leading movements; it lies in valuing every single person. To him, each devotee is a chapter in the grand story of Satsang.
He reminds us that the measure of a saint’s love is not how many he meets, but how deeply he remembers each one.
The Call to Reconnect
A Simple Act, A Profound Impact
In a world of fleeting interactions and digital distractions, Swamishri’s example calls us to slow down and reach out. Perhaps there’s someone you haven’t spoken to in years — a childhood friend, a fellow devotee, or a relative who drifted away.
Reach out. Call them. Remember them. It may seem small, but in the spiritual sense, it can rekindle a light that’s been dim for too long.
“Today, reach out to someone you haven’t spoken to in years. This simple act could mean more than you can imagine.”
Carrying Swamishri’s Love Forward
The story of Mahant Swami Maharaj and Ramnikbhai Thakkar isn’t just a tale of miraculous memory — it’s a lesson in divine mindfulness. It shows us that to live spiritually is to love consciously, to remember compassionately, and to connect eternally.
Every smile, every darshan, every moment shared with others can become a thread in the tapestry of divine remembrance — if only we see them through the eyes of love.
