The sadhu is the only true boat…

Estimated read time 2 min read

In a world driven by desire, possessions, and fleeting pleasures, the true sadhu stands apart like a sturdy boat in the stormy sea of samsar (worldly existence). He is not just a renunciant by appearance, but one who offers his deepest love and devotion to the manifest form of God, recognizing divinity not as an abstract idea but as a living presence. Such a saint remains untouched by worldly allure — he seeks neither wealth nor admiration, and has no attachment to people for selfish gain.

To him, the world is but a stage of illusion and suffering, a constant cycle of joy and sorrow. Yet, instead of being caught in this turmoil, the sadhu sings the glories of God, firmly established beyond the pull of the three gunas (qualities) — sattva, rajas, and tamas. He neither celebrates victory nor mourns defeat, for his heart is anchored in the eternal, not the ephemeral.

This saint, like the formless Brahman, directs his worship to Parabrahma — the Supreme God — remaining detached from sensual temptations and mental agitations. Such a soul is described by Brahmanand as the truly wise one, for he understands the difference between what merely appears and what eternally is. In this awareness lies the strength and serenity of the sadhu, who walks through the world but belongs wholly to the divine.

VerseTranslation
Sadhu soi nav sansarme………The sadhu is the only true boat…
Pragat praman Hari pad priti,
nahi ashak dhan narme… 1
He offers love to God manifest,
and has no love for the worldly rest;
Mayakrut so satya na manat,
janat dukh parivarme;
Gunatit rahi Harigun gavat,
chinta nahi jit harme…2
He sees the world as a fleeting show,
And knows in it lies pain and woe;
Beyond all gunas, he sings God’s praise;
In the world’s win-loss, he has no craze.
Brahma hoy Parabrahma upāsat,
bahat na vishay vikarme;
Brahmanand sant soi sacha,
samjat sar asarme… 3
Like Brahman still, to God he prays,
Unmoved by passion’s tempting waves;
Brahmanand says: that saint is wise,
Who knows what fades and what will rise.
