In the Swaminarayan tradition, the kirtans composed by Brahmanand Swami, such as Harijan Sacha Re, Tekna Mele Re, Jo Hoy Himmat Re, and Pet Katari Re, are powerful hymns that inspire courage and devotion. These kirtans were written during a time when being a Swaminarayan devotee was fraught with challenges. Kings like Vajesinh Darbar of Bhavnagar opposed Bhagwan Swaminarayan, punishing devotees like Rupabhai, who endured immense suffering for their faith. To uplift the morale of these devotees, Bhagwan Swaminarayan instructed Brahmanand Swami to compose these kirtans, which emphasize inner courage and unwavering faith in God.
The Essence of Courage
The kirtans highlight the qualities of a true devotee—someone who remains steadfast in their faith, even in the face of adversity. Brahmanand Swami’s words, “Je urma himmat rakhe” (one who keeps courage in their heart), define a devotee as someone who embodies inner strength and fearlessness. Similarly, Muktanand Swami’s kirtan Dhir Dhurandhara describes a devotee who faces billions of enemies but sees them as insignificant, like a blade of grass. This courage is not just physical but spiritual, rooted in the conviction that God is always with them.
The Battle Within
In today’s world, the battles we face may not be physical, but they are equally challenging. The enemies are internal—lust, anger, greed, and ego. These are the Manushya Swabhavs (human instincts) that we must conquer. The Vachanamrut, a sacred text, teaches that the true battle is within the mind, between the forces of Satsang (good company) and Kusang (bad company). A devotee must strengthen their resolve to follow the path of righteousness, even when tempted by worldly distractions.
Practical Lessons in Courage
The stories of devotees like Rupabhai, Abhaysingh Darbar, and modern-day youths like Param and Vinny Patel illustrate how courage manifests in everyday life. Param, a 15-year-old, refused to break his Ekadashi fast during a school camping trip, despite pressure from teachers and peers. Vinny Patel, a university student, boldly wore the Tilak Chandlo in front of his entire lecture hall, explaining its significance with confidence. These acts of courage, though small, reflect a deep commitment to one’s principles and faith.
The Role of Faith
Faith in God and the Guru is the foundation of this courage. As Mahant Swami Maharaj often says, “Your prapti (attainment of God) is greater than your problems.” The kirtans and scriptures remind us that we are never alone in our struggles. Bhagwan Swaminarayan and the Guru are always with us, guiding and supporting us. This faith eliminates fear of the future and regret of the past, allowing us to focus on the present and live with purpose.
Conclusion
The kirtans of Brahmanand Swami and the teachings of Bhagwan Swaminarayan are timeless reminders of the power of faith and courage. Whether facing external opposition or internal struggles, a true devotee remains resolute, knowing that God’s strength is infinite. By following the Guru’s guidance and staying true to our principles, we can overcome any obstacle and live a life of fulfillment and devotion. As the kirtans say, “Draḍhtā joīne re, tenī madad kare Morārī”—when we take the first step with courage, God ensures we succeed.
